Why is gold so hot?

I asked my hubby why there seem to be so much interest in gold. He told me this is just a way of hiking up the prices. People make it so exciting, profiting and easy to to buy gold.

Then, it creates a mob effect and when everyone starts buying gold, the price will skyrocket. This is the reason why so much publicity is given to gold and the papers are reporting about prices going up all the time.

However, how can one ignore the prospect of making a lot of money buying gold and not get tempted too? I think I will tread cautiously and buy gold too just in case the prices go too high up for me to afford in future.

I have forgotten that I made this a few years ago. I used to have a lot of time and love doing all these cutesy stuffs. Though my kids do not care if they are in pretty form or just a blob, I love looking at my so-called masterpiece.

Waffle

I am hankering for some waffle for tea time. Everyone loves waffles in my home. However, I do not have a machine to make them. So, we only get to eat them when we go to A&W.

I think we must go for some waffle tomorrow. The hot crispy outside with soft inside, drizzle with honey and a piece of butter melting on those creases.

Oh dear, I am salivating now.

Gold has such a long history. Since Moses time they have been fighting over gold. Maybe even much longer than that. So, do you wonder if we are still having those gold from Biblical times that are still floating around.

People store bullion and use it as their super power. Countries who are rich usually have a lot of gold in their reserve.

It is like the most versatile piece of investment. No wonder gold remains a good investment and sought after by so many people.

Egg sandwich

I bought this sandwich from a college cafe. They took so much time to prepare it. First they make the regular sandwich with tuna filling. Then, they patiently fry the egg and place the sandwich inside.

After that they gently wrap the sandwich inside with the egg and make the zig zag design with chili sauce and mayo.

Unfortunately, it was so messy to eat and I don't think I ever want to order one again.

Seed for health

Do you know what is this piece of transparent thing? It is the sena tree. The tree is huge and these seeds will fly all over the jungle to spread and germinate.

However, the Chinese use the seeds to brew as a health drink. It is suppose to cool down our body and makes a nice drink when mix with the right herbs.

Funny how people are so smart to know what can be drank and what cannot be.

Well, nowadays, people do not do that anymore. What they do is to invest and buy them like buying stocks. One do not actually own it in physical form. It is more of a paper gold.

I found a nice frozen foods supplier who sell these fabulous jumbo sausages.

The owner make the sausages himself using very fresh meats. There are several flavours but I love the spicy ones best.

It doesn't take long to prepare and it comes as a meal with some potatoes and vegetables.

Missing my chempedak cake

I found this old photo in my blog. I haven't bake this cake for a long time because it is made of seasonal fruit call chempedak.

Chempedak has a very strong smell and not many people like to eat it. However, I love it in icecream and cake because the aroma is so nice. It has a little caramel taste to it and lots of fibers too.

Now how many months do I have to wait before I can eat my chempedak cake again?

13 going 30

I am watching this old movie call 13 going 30. I am just wondering if I like being 13 more or being 30.

Then, there is the thought of 16 and 61. Do I want to remain 16 or 61? I suppose there is no answer to this. I like being 16 but I think I wont mind being 61. That is if I have a lot of money to spend and travel the world without a care.

Maybe if I start to buy more gold coins now, I will be able to retire and enjoy my life.

So, it is always good to be thrifty at 13, 30 or 16 so that when we reach 60, we have enough money to enjoy. Of course, if we can find a rich husband to finance all that, we do not need to worry about this.

Diwali or Deepavali

Kids love festivals because it means lots of foods to eat and plenty of gassy drinks. It is one of those times when parents relax the rule and they can pig out on sweets and drink gassy drinks till they feel sick.

I love taking photos of kids whenever I am at those events. Usually, I focus on the children and their smiling faces because these scenes always cheer up boring magazines. My friends asked me why I like kids so much. Well, what can I say? I am a mom and need I say more?

I cannot wait for Christmas

Once again, it is Christmas! Well, not exactly because it is still more than a month before Christmas. But still I love looking at my past Christmas photos.

Life after acne

My friend has suffered greatly after an acne treatment. She has constant aches and pains and initially thought she is suffering from food poisoning. Then, after several doctor's visits, they found that she has something like irritable bowel syndrome. However, she was shock when she found out that it could be one of the side effects of her acne treatment.

She looked up several sites and learned that there is Accutane lawsuit after lawsuit over this matter.

Now, she is considering if she should pursue and take up a legal case because she is really miserable with her current conditions. Sometimes, she is just too ill to work and the problem is nothing helps. So, she had to stay home and wait till the discomforts ease before she can come back to work again.

I went to this waterpark where they have the ski ride. It is kind of fun to ride over those huge slides and water features. The entrance ticket include one ride and my boys had such a fun time hanging their feet over the people screaming as they slide down the scaries loops and water slides.

I also enjoyed the scenery from the top. The ski ride goes very slow so it is a relaxing ride and not at all scary. Well, unless you are afraid of height.

If there is one type of foods that I can never get tired of eating, it has to be Thai foods.

It has such lovely range of wonderful tastes. I just had a big plate of their somtam or green papaya salad. It is very spicy, hot, sweet, sour and salty as well. The kind of taste that wakes up your palate and get your hungry. Next, I had some green curry and followed by sweet dessert of mango rice.

So, if I am going to be stranded on an island with only one type of foods, it has to be
Thai foods.

We always here people telling us it is the best time to buy gold bullion. I wonder if that is true because I read that the prices of gold has skyrocketed.

This morning, when I went to the temple, I also notice a small Hindu shrine by the Chinese temple. It is rather peculiar that our different faiths have so much in common.

There was this Hindu man who was burning this tea light and then, make several rounds around the tiny shrine while another Chinese man also joined him.

These same people will also pray to the Chinese gods and I think that exemplify religious tolerance and understanding.

I went to the temple this morning because I wanted to shoot some people. While I was there, I couldn't help shooting the temple because these lovely red lanterns are always a joy to shoot.

If you like photography, do get into a Chinese temple because there are always so many things to shoot and so many things to admire. From the burning candles to the joss-sticks and it's mystical smoke to the people praying, they are all lovely subjects.

Do not feed the pigeons

People are oblivious to the signs to remind visitors to the temple not to feed the pigeons. They will nonchalantly throw leftover rice and buns to the pigeons.

In Hong Kong they do not allow feeding the pigeons and the city council will fine anyone doing that. However, over here, they do not enforce this and hence, the pigeons population keep growing and growing.

Flowers garland

These fresh flowers garlands are handmade. I watched them weave the flowers into a garland and must say it is mesmerizing to see the petals forming into a chain.

Usually, these garlands are used for prayers as the Hindu use it to garland their gods. At other times, these garlands are use for VIPs at functions.

We can find these flower stalls along the roadsides in Penang. If you are a tourist, make sure you see how they weave the flowers. It is a skill indeed.

In case you wonder, these are little tortoises made of flour and food colouring. The tortoises are meant as good luck symbols and are offered to the god of hades and the other gods worshipped by the Taoists.

If you are wondering if they are edible, yes they are. However you need to remove the colourful skin and enjoy just the inner white part. It is very much like bread except that it is much more sweetish.

Tomatoes like my Farmville

The other day when I was on holidays, I went to visit a vegetable farm. I was sooo happy and excited to be running around the tomatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other vegetable plants.

They are just like my Farmville farm which I tended with so much love and care. I doubt I can grow real vegetables because vegetable farms are so sunny and hot. I don't like bugs and I hate sweating in them. So, I shall just be happy with my Farmville farm.

Dates and nuts

Have you tried stuffing nuts into dates and eat them? I love it. Some shops do sell these prepared but unfortunately, the combination is sometimes not what I like. For example they may use almond with harder dates or cashew nuts and other nuts.

I like to buy my own dates and then, use cashew nuts to stuff into these dates. They are so nice to enjoy.

Nuts and dates are both very nutritious foods so if you are feeling hungry, try that combination.

Opening a restaurant

Recently, I have been thinking a lot about opening a restaurant. Of course, I am not the one who is going to do the cooking. I am just investing so that my sons can have a place where they can hone their cooking skills.

So, I was telling hubby that we should seriously consider getting a nice location with a lovely building for a restaurant. I want something quaint and rustic. Nothing too fancy, but not too shabby either.

I have never seen how strawberries grow in the wilderness. I have read a lot about picking ripen strawberries in Enid Blyton's stories and have wondered how wonderful it is to be able to do that.

However, the kind of strawberries planted here are too orderly. They hang down from higher places so the strawberries never touch the earth. Are wild strawberries supposed to grow this way?

Do you know that the hibiscus flower which is our national flower is edible? Well,don't go out and start chewing on those flowers because not every one of them is edible.

Only a certain species are safe and they are turned into tea. You can infuse the dried petals and drink. It is suppose to lower cholesterol. I have never tasted hibiscus flowers yet. If you have, can you tell me what it tastes like? Is it fragrant?

Development in the rainforest

I went to this canopy walk in the rainforest a couple of months ago. The canopy walk is touted to be one of the world's tallest canopy walk, whereby they string all the walkway on top of those tall trees.

But what puzzled me is why they never thought of making proper access roads before they build this tourist attraction? After a year of having the canopy walk, now only they thought of widening the roads.

So, the whole forest was a mess of red laterite because they are bulldozing through the forest to build the road. Bad planning, I say.

Hot Blooms

The hot, hot, hot weather during the months of December, January and February in Penang (and probably most parts of Malaysia) brings out some beautiful blooms. While the grasses are turning brown and other green plants withered, some trees burst into breathtaking blooms. One of my favourite flower is the bright red coloured flame-of-the-forest. (Hope to snap a photo one day).

Meantime, let me share a pretty purple flowers tree. These are very old trees, with little leaves. Am not sure of the name though. I found about 4-5 of these trees lining the Padang Polo edge near the Penang General Hospital. They are a beauty. How I wish I can climb up the tree and capture macro shots of these soft, fluffy, two-toned flowers. The tree is rather high, climbing may either kill me or landed me in jail (whichever is no different, I think).

I don't particularly like flowers. However, I had been taking photos of flowers ever since I had my new camera. Every kind of flowers. Even the wild weeds turn out great under my macro shots. (hmmm...but then, I always bring out the best in a person too.) And no flowers get away without being shot (by the camera).

This tree looks miserably undernourished the whole year through. However, with the hot weather, they suddenly burst into golden glory overnight. This photo is taken from my bedroom window. It is a beautiful sight, with the flowers blooming and petals scattered on the pathway. I had blogged about this earlier but that photo was taken from the ground but this is from the top.

Fishes in wet markets

I do not like going to wet markets but there is something attractive about the fishes in wet markets. These fishes seem so much fresher than fishes in supermarkets. Those from the supermarkets sometime smell of supermarket smell.

I was in Sabah and took these photos of fishes in wet markets. They have so many varieties of fishes in wet markets that I have never seen before.

Properties investment is not my cup of tea

A friend of mine loves to speculate in the property market and she loves to dabble in it. Of course, she can afford to because she has the capital to buy and sell homes as her husband is rich.

For me, I am not into taking big risk and cannot afford to play around in this field. I will buy only the home I need to live in and not more. I am kind of afraid the property prices will drop instead of appreciate. Then, there is the worry of not being able to lease out the property.

Green tea and red beans

Green tea icecream and red beans or azuki beans are a match made in heaven. I love it when Starbucks have the blended macha with red beans. I would grab one every other day because it is sooo good.

However, they only have for a while and no longer sells them anymore.

I had this green tea icecream with red beans a few days ago. It is not so nice because it is too sweet.

Seafoods in coconut

I love the authenticity of this dish. It is a pot of spicy tomyam with lots of fresh seafoods like squids, prawns and fish.

The place the cooked tomyam goong into a fresh, young coconut. After we had eaten the seafoods, we can scrap the coconut flesh and enjoy it in a spicy way.

The taste? Great.

Cannon ball tree

This is an extension from my other blog 5xmom. This plant is planted in 1938 which makes it a very, very old tree. The plant botanic name is couroupita guianensis or call cannon ball tree. I found it so cute because the fruits hanging there looks like botak (bald) coconuts whilst the flowers look like the rafflesia. I had been to the Penang Botanical Gardens many times but never seen this plant in full bloom and fruiting.

Pussy willow for the whole season

My pussy willows stalks will remain with me for the whole year. Usually, I buy it during the Chinese lunar new year as Chinese pussy willows are only available during that time.

However, the dried stalks look good and so I leave them in the corner for the whole year or until they get too dusty. They are so pretty isn't it? I love the white fluffy chinese pussy willow buds.

Bread with grains

I just adore breads like these because of the grains. These whole grains like oats, wheat, sesame, poppy and etc are good fibre source. Meantime, the soft fluffy buns inside are so delicious.

I usually get my favourite bread with grains from a bakery downtown. They bake it fresh everyday and if I am lucky, I get those buns which are just hot out of the oven.

There is no balm like spending money

I went to town with the kids today. We wanted to test out my new car. It is just a tiny car and the cheapest of the range.

We didn't do any shopping except going to have our lunch and then, hit the bookshop. I bought a book by Anne Rice about Jesus. In fact, I forgot I bought the book. I came home and had to rush out for a meeting.

Now, I have time to sit back and enjoy my book. It has been a while since I buy a book and it feels good to do that. It is certainly nice to spend money. But it is also good for me to find out what are the most profitable and stable way of investing. Gold prices are so high now and I am not sure if it is going to come down. The end of the eating spree

Once Chinese New Year is over, it is going to be the end of the eating binge that I had been indulging in. It is time I go back to eating healthily and start to lose some of my extra pounds. Since Christmas until now, I have been eating non-stop without a care.

Due to all those eating, clothes do not look good on me so I didn't buy any. Actually it is good thing too because I saved money. This is the record year where I don't buy so many clothes that I do not wear.

So, dieting is starting soon. But no weight loss pills for me. Only less eating.

My little boy is so devoted to Pet Society

My little boy loves playing with Pet Society. He maintains the pet he has so well, I am so proud of him.

If you have not heard of Pet Society, it is an online game available through Facebook account. It is like a virtual pet whereby you can dress it up, style it and buy lots of stuffs for the pet. The Pet Society also have a virtual village where your Facebook friends can visit each other, interact and give gifts.

What makes Pet Society interesting is the many things that we can DIY like buying the latest wood flooring, new clothes, seasonal items and etc.

Kek Lok Si

Chinese steamed herbal chicken

There is nothing more comforting than a bowl of steaming hot Chinese herbal chicken soup. It gives life to tired bodies and comforts frayed nerves.

That's why new mothers who just gave birth practically live on herbal chicken soup for the next 30 days after they gave birth. The herbs are specially selected to nourish the new moms.

Eventhough I do not need that kind of nourishment anymore, I still like to double boil the occasional dong guai chicken for comfort. There are almost 10 types of dried barks, roots and dates in the mixture. I leave it to the Chinese medicine man to prescribe the right combination for me.

Four months later

My seven seater car which was damaged in the flood finally came out of the mechanic shop last week. However, things aren't like what it used to be. The aircond is not as cold as before because the compressor was damaged and they replaced a new one for us. The car, eventhough had been cleaned, still has some dusty smell.

Although we are lucky that we have the car insured against flood, we are still a bit disappointed that it never gets back to its former state. However, we count our lucky stars that our auto insurance covers the repair costs at the bill was exhorbitant. Otherwise, it will be a double whammy as we cannot use the car for four months, have to pay and didn't get the car in its former condition.

Oh when can I finish all my backlog work?

It is such a chore to have emails reminding me that I must complete my jobs. Just a few minutes ago, I got the last warning that I MUST MUST MUST finish them by today or they will cancel the deal.

What can I do but to rush all of them inspite of my fever and chills. When you have the flu, your brain sort of get stuck and you getting think properly. However, I still must come up with my 200 pages of thing and time is running out.

I think I better start living healthily so that the flu bugs do not want to stick to me so much. But that means lot of exercise and fresh air, which I hate. And I am not keen on diet pills like Leptovox though some people do claim they do not need to exercise and can lose weight.

Lui cha fan (or thunder tea rice) hakka rice

This is the first time I eat Lui Cha Fan or thunder tea rice. I have read so much about this dish, the origins and how people come up with this. You see, the peasants were poor and only have greens. They do not have lavish meats and seafoods. So, they come up with a portion of rice with lots of greens and nuts.

The rice is served with a bowl of tea and herbs soup.

So, it is not only healthy, it is cheap too. However, this plate costs me $6 as this is no now longer the poor peasants meal but a restaurant dish.

I am watching some series and each DVD has this stupid ad that annoys the hell out of me. However, I cannot fast forward that part because these sneaky producers have made the ads part un-forwardable.

So, I have to endure them. You know what kind of ad? The one from the MLM company selling health supplement. If you are selling health supplements or those weight loss pills like Fenphedra, then you need to show healthy people or slim girls, right? But no, this stupid ad shows the MLM company director blabbing. If that is not self ego, I don't know what is.

Christmas is only ten days away

I just look at the calendar and gosh it is only ten days before Christmas. Yet, I have not done a single Christmas preparation and still haven't figure out what to do for Christmas dinner. I have no Christmas dinner ideas yet and wonder what I am going to do because I normally prepare dinner for my inlaws.

I think it will cool if I can buy a plane ticket and escape to las vegas nevada. So, I can spend Christmas at the casinos instead of cooking in the kitchen, sweating over the turkey.

A&W Coney Dog sucks

I have forgotten when was the last time I eat hotdogs. I never like hotdogs, frankfurters, sausages or any processed meats. However, I do remember eating some decent coney dog from A&W before.

So, I thought I can try it again. However, the A&W Coney Dog is really horrible. The bun is dry and hard and the sausage hard like plastic.

I am going off for a holiday tomorrow and got to clear all my works by tonight. Last week has been real busy because I have an assignment that requires me to write 200 pages of things. I only manage 10 because I cannot think under pressure and every word comes out so lame.

How I wish I can afford a longer holiday and stay in one of those beautiful vacation rentals. Just imagine....just me and my computer. Then I can finish all my work without pressure!

Recently a lot of people are into making fruit enzymes at home. I tried making my first batch of fruit enzyme using oranges. The result is not quite what I expected. It yield only a little and it tastes more like orange syrup.

The fruits must have fermented more than it should and now, it has very nice alcoholic taste to it. I feel a warmth after drinking it, more like hic hic hic orange liqueur. I hope I don't kill myself with a poisoned enzyme.

Do you suffer from heel pain/Plantar Fasciitis

Not long after I had my baby, I have this excruciating pain whenever I woke up in the middle of the night to walk. The pain made it difficult for me to just get out of bed and start walking. I need a few minutes to get my soles accustomed to the hard tile flooring before I can walk. So, I bought a cushiony night slippers to ease the pain.

I didn't know that there is this condition call Plantar Fasciitis and they have special night splints to prevent the pain. It is an apparatus to attach to the heel during night time and one can go to sleep in it.

Of course, my heel pain wasn't serious and it goes back to normal after a while.

Sorry but I have not heard of the above term before. So, I really must Google for what is Indian meal moth traps. Then, I found out that Indian meal moth traps is actually a pest control. Not just any pest control but to attract the males with some sort of hormone bait. Hmmm...that is interesting.

I guess we don't get the kind of infestation over here in our hot tropical country. That's why I have not heard of this moth trap. But if you live in a country where these moths lay eggs, then, you will want to find out how to get rid of them by using the moth traps.

The only problem I have in my pantry and kitchen is weevils. I am still trying to get rid of weevils in my flour, pasta, rice and every darn thing made of flour.

It is at this age that I regret that I have never really study. In other countries, people have easy access to university online and they can go back to study even at older age. However, where I live, we don't have that unless we are prepared to pay lots of money. All the money I have are to be used for my sons' education for I have to put my wish at the back burner.

Studying when you already have kids are not easy. I could hardly finish a simple question as my son would be asking me a million questions and I just cannot concentrate long enough to complete a full sentence. Yet, I have that longings to be able to just spend my days studying for something. I don't know what I want to study yet but who knows, God may find a way for me.

So, keep dreaming, keep praying and I may get there someday.

Chicken or egg first?

Yesterday, I had a conversation with my six years old boy. We were putting the eggs that we have just bought from the hypermarket. He is very fussy about touching eggs and though he loves to pick them up and put them into the fridge, he will quickly run to wash his hands. He said the eggs came out of the chicken butt so it is smelly.

I asked him if the chicken or the egg comes first. He immediately replied, "Of course the chicken because the eggs came out of the chicken butt. The chicken pooot out the eggs." He was so sure he got the right answer, looking so smug.

Then, I asked him, "In that case, how did the chicken come about, from where?"

He went, "Oh, oh...I don't know!" and ran out of the kitchen.

Getting drunk

I admire how some women can get drunk with just a little alcohol. My sisters could get tipsy with just a few sips. However, I don't know to count myself lucky or unlucky that I have very slow reaction and strong resistance to alcohol.

I caught the documentary in one of the TV channels about the making of the The Cirque du Soleil. I have forgotten which channel it is but the whole show was so mesmerizing. It shows us what goes behind the scenes in making the show. The Cirque du Soleil is one of the shows found on Las Vegas Shows.

If you want to buy the tickets for the Las Vegas Shows, you can check out the link. There are several shows for The Cirque du Soleil. It is about the life of The Beatles and the backdrop coupled with the everlasting hits from The Beatles are absolutely stunning and awesome.

Beside this, there are Barry Manilow concerts and other interesting shows. Sigh...i won't ever get to watch them live in Las Vegas so I will have to make do with TV shows. If you are there, make sure that you find the best way to see one of the shows because I am sure they are worth watching.

Oyster sauce blanched vegetables

This is one of those quick and easy dish to prepare. Normally I like to use siew pak choy which has very juicy and crunchy stems and green leaves.

What I do is :

Wash the vegetable thoroughly and blanch in boiling water until it is cooked. Take out of hot water and gently press the water away. Then, toss in garlic oil.

To get garlic oil, just chop some garlic and fry in a bit of oil until fragrant.

Add a dash of oyster sauce and the dish is ready to be served.

Blue cheese and pomegranate chicken salad

If you make a Google search for photos of pomegranate, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful photos of this ruby red fruits.

I also love to buy and eat pomegranate. Unfortunately, I only see them at the stores once a year because they only import this fruit from Spain towards the end of the year.

The other day, I bought one pomegranate and added some of the red, juicy fruit into my chicken salad with blue cheese. I flavour it with some balsamic vinegar salad dressing.

I have read about fat burner and seen the ads on TV. They made it like it is some miracle that can burn fats. However, I doubt it works so easily.

One of my friends told me she once tried some fat burner but it made her heartbeat goes too fast. I guess it is the caffeine inside that cause it. It is like running a marathon.

Fresh pasta is made of eggs, water and flour. Some recipe calls for olive oil while the version from Jamie Oliver homemade pasta recipe uses only water and eggs.

Therefore, it is awfully easy to clean a pasta machine. One just need to brush off the extra dough and flour stuck to the machine, wipe with cloth and it is clean.

I have also made a post on how to clean a pasta machine on my other food blog and hope no one wash the darn machine like my friend did. She got her pasta machine rusty just after one use. *roll eyes*

Portobello mushroom

Recently, I have not been able to find nice, huge portobello mushrooms in the market. All I can see are smallish ones the size of a large button mushrooms.

I wonder why they don't import huge ones like the above anymore. I love to make baked portobello mushrooms with cheese. It is so sinfully good. I especially enjoy mushrooms when I am on vegetarian diet during the season of Lent. It is like meat to me.

The above is a plate of fettucine which is made with my bare hands. It is fun making pasta at home using a pasta maker. All you need is a pair of strong hands, flour and eggs.

Enjoy kneading the dough and then, run them through the pasta machine. Pasta machine is easily found in the store or on online stores. A pasta maker costs mere tens of dollars and yet, it serves it purpose well.

Do give making pasta at home. It is much healthier and more important, much yummier.

Well, I guess many will say it is a cake. It is actually swiss roll. Making swiss roll is part of cooking course my son is taking. It is not easy to make swiss rolls.

There are so many factors to take into consideration and one needs speed to make nice rolls. The first attempt did not turn out too great because the texture was a bit dense and it doesn't roll up prettily. Nevertheless, the swiss roll smells great and tastes nice.

Am I too old to buy term life insurance?

Well, according to my hubby, I am. He said it is not even worth it for me to increase my medical insurance coverage. Right now, my medical insurance does not cover cancer. I asked him if I should do it as I have seen a lot of people regretting they didn't cover themselves from cancer.

However, hubby said the premium will be very costly and there is very little point in doing it right now. He was an insurance salesman so he knows what he is talking about. I must not let all the paranoia gets to me. So, forget about asking for term life insurance rates because I can just peacefully die without leaving any money. Hey, no one relies on me so why worry? My hubby and sons certainly do not need my money.

The other day, I was discussing about the impending doom the nation and the world are facing. It seems like the future is bleak where properties, investments and share market are concerned.

So, I ask my hubby what is the worst possible scenario we will face as a family? Hubby told me that this round of recession will not hit us as badly as the last one back in the 80s. Both hubby and I were totally broke and penniless then. However, now we have savings and we have not purchased any properties at overpriced value.

Hubby said if the situation is really bad, prices of properties and real estates will go down. So, if we have savings, we can even grab some prime commercial real estate and hope the market picks up.

Oh well, do I sound like I am actually anticipating a recession?

Murukku for deepavali

I am so proud of the first batch of murukku I made last night. It is not easy to attempt the traditional Indian snacks because I am Chinese, ok? So, I always have that idea that a Chinese cannot cook Indian and vice versa.

However, curiousity got the better of me and I decided to go out and buy the mould from India, the premixed dhal flour for murukku and fry the snacks myself.

It is quite successful but the murukku will taste better if it has been spicier.

Nowadays, Friday is the only day where I have absolutely nothing to do. Forget about weekends because the children have so many things going on and I have to drive them around. Monday to Thursday I have to obediently do what I wanted to do. So, Friday is the day where I can sleep as late as I want and get up as late as I want too.

Then, I can spend the whole day baking or cooking something that I had been meaning to do all week. Plus all the eating I can. Going to new places to try out new foods. However, this routine only last for a few months and I hope I will be going back to a complete week with nothing to do but eat and sleep. It was pretty good then but I never appreciate it until I don't have a full 24 hours to myself.

But then, it is probably a bad idea as I may get fatter and fatter and need diet pills. Have you heard of orovo side effects? I am not taking, so don't warn me, ok?

I am sure many would never guess what this pastry is. A lot will probably says it is cookies, looking at the shape.

However, can you believe that it is actually cream puffs? The dough for cream puff is rather firm and it is piped using a piping bag with a fluted mould.

Will you wear a Dansko?

I have big feet and I try to pick shoes that do not emphasize my feet's size. I will take a long time to select a pair of shoes that not only looks good but also feel comfortable.

So, if you ask me if I want to wear Dansko shoes, I will probably give it a pass. Dansko shoes are described as professional stapled clog.

And as the name, clog suggests, it is a rather thick shoes. However, I am sure men will not mind the broad surface and love the comfort. Although the women dansko such as the Dansko Merrie Clog looks kind of cute, I still cannot get used to the idea of wearing something like that. But if you love comfortable and lasting shoes, then, Dansko is the right pair for you.

My iMac is getting slower, should I upgrade Mac memory?

The noob in me thought that my Mac is immune to slow speed and works like magic. I didn't know that one needs to upgrade Mac memory.

However, these few weeks, my Mac has been running really slow. If I open a few applications at the same time, it will become like a tortoise. I have also stored far too many photos and was too lazy to back-up my files. Sigh.....I hope it doesn't crash and cause me to lose all data.

I had been searching around the net to find out if a Mac will give me the kind of headaches like a Windows. So far, from what I gathered, it is a lot better. So, I think I will just keep using and don't bother about back-up. I do not have an external disk drive so I cannot use the Time Machine application on my Mac too. Such a waste of money to have the feature and yet, never use it huh?

Canon ball flower

I have taken lots of photo of this exotic and special flower call the canon ball flower. It is a tree from the South of Americas and is planted in our Botanical Gardens.

The flower dropped after blooming and all the pink petals on the grounds look so lovely. I just love the tiny yellow tentacle like thing and it reminds me of the undersea corals.

Getting the right insurance coverage is important

Lately, I have met a lot of cancer patients. One of their concerns is to find enough money for treatment. Without insurance coverage, many of them are not able to continue seeking treatment at the private hospitals and have to be moved to a public hospital.

Very often, we never give much thoughts about this because we merely depend on our employers to help us. However, when wwe have retired and without insurance coverage, that's when we will start falling sick. On top of that, many did not realise that their insurance coverage does not cover treatment for cancer. Treatment for cancer is a long and financial draining process. So, some did not have enough to pay for their treatment after they had exhausted the limit set by their health insurance.

That's why I am pondering if I should also pay more for my health insurance to cover treatment of cancer too. Maybe I should look for a health insurance quote and be prepared to face any eventuality.

Recipe for white radish cake

I made a really yummy white radish cake today. It is one of those things that we grew up with. There are lousy ones and tasty ones sold at the stalls. Dim sum restaurants also offer this as dim sum.

I am so glad to try my hands at making them and the white radish cake turned out really fantastic. I have another tray in the fridge and I am going to fry them for breakfast tomorrow.

Horrible lightings

I just uploaded an album and I noticed how awful I looked. I had not been sleeping much lately and spent time outdoor, in the hot sun. My skin has turned several shades darker and I am not liking this.

You know why? When our skin tone changes, our make-up, especially the foundation no longer fits us. We need to change new ones. And I cannot afford more Bobbi Brown. That probably explains why I look so tarty. My bathroom lighting is not made for make-up and it gives me false reflections. So, I had probably put a wee bit too much of foundation and I look so pasty.

I wonder how much bird's nest I need to swallow to get back the radiance?

Steam cleaners to prevent allergies?

I have two sons who are highly allergic to dustmites. They had been tested and it is found that the source of their childhood asthma was from the dustmites, or rather the droppings of the dustmites.

Some of the suggestions given to me include changing their bedsheets and other things they come into contact with frequently. The doctor also told us to get them air purifier. It was a chore but after taking all the steps, they did sneeze less and get sick less.

The other suggestion given by friends was to buy steam cleaners to make sure that everything is absolutely clean. Thank goodness they had outgrown the stage now. But if you are dealing with a child with allergies, do check out all the suggestions and hope it prevents your child from getting sick so often.

Of late, crimes have increased. It is rather scary to hear of yet another robbery cum murder. If I remember correctly, two weeks ago, a Ferrari owner was robbed as well. They robbers are all very informed and they know where to hit. They will look out for all the rich folks and especially those who owns branded cars, big bungalows and target them. That's why I don't need Ferrari parts as I don't want to be the target.

However, having said that, if I am that rich, I probably can afford a few bodyguards to watch over me and a really hunky driver to take me around. Then, I will have no worries in my red Ferrari, eh?

Gift of a playstation 3

I never encourage my children with gifts for studying hard. I feel that it is bad to put undue pressure on them on their achievements. However, many parents like to dangle a juicy carrot like a playstation 3 or other electronic gadget to get their children to study.

Recently, my son just completed an important exam. We do not put emphasis on his result as he is only 12 years old. Whatever he gets, we are fine with it. He did asked us if we are going to give him a playstation 3 if he gets good result. I told him that I would get it for him when we can afford it. Right now, we heard the price is dropping so we shall see.

Badges and T-shirt buying frenzy

These last few days have seen me out at night to join candlelight vigil. Actually, I am terribly tired and wish to just stay home and do nothing. I had been busy since Friday where I cooked for a group. Then, the next two days, I was busy running around the camp.

At nights, I was all gung-ho to join candlelight vigils. There is another one tonight and tomorrow night, I will be attending a wedding anniversary dinner and also helped out at the dinner.

During all these, I have bought many promotional items like badges and t-shirts. It is good to join in a cause and make our voices known. That's why I am terribly happy wearing the badge and t-shirt around to say Down with ISA.

I am highly allergic to penicillin group of antibiotics. I didn't know that until I had a terrible reaction. My whole body broke into itchy rashes, my eyes teared and swollen and I practically cannot face the world. I am lucky that it doesn't affect my airways or I would die!

Since then, I am terribly afraid of antibiotics. I am also allergic to bactrium which is a common antibiotics given for most stubborn flu bugs. So, I was wondering if amoxicillin is also part of the type of antibiotics I am allergic to? I tried accessing the site but at the moment, it is inaccessible.

Therefore, always alert your doctors to the type of medicines you are allergic to. Eventhough they may have noted that down, some new doctors or locums may overlooked it. I had another bout of allergies when one doctor missed it and gave me something I am allergic to. Be careful.

How to prevent weevils in the kitchen?

I made a post about getting rid of weevils in rice in my food blog. A few people have offered their useful tips and I hope to clear these weevils off my kitchen. Otherwise, they may infest all my foodstuffs if they are not controlled.

A few people suggested to me to use garlic to deter the weevils from making their homes in my bag of rice. I shall be throwing my garlic bulbs into the rice. Hope garlic prevent weevils from infesting.

Is there an age when we outgrow our acnes?

I am sorry to say that the answer is no. I have friends who are in their 40s and 50s who still struggle with their acne problems. It is due to their ignorance that acne can be controlled with the right eating habits, i.e. avoiding foods they are allergic to and also go for those acne treatment.

They need to find some right treatment and once they find a good one to control their acnes, it means less heartaches and problems for them. But these friends of mine insisted that they can outgrow the acne. Well, they are already that old, how old do you think before their acne will go away?

This is going to be a year when I shall look forward to the annual budget. So many political stuffs have happened and I think it is expected that the government will try to give us some candies to sooth our sores.

One of them is probably to reduce interest rates so that more people will sign up for credit card. At the same time, I wonder if they will increase the interest rates for savings account? I doubt so because they may want us to spend more than to save. Nowadays, every credit card companies are trying to push their products.

Today, when I was at the bank, I was surprised with their excellent customer service. However, I soon find out that they actually want to push some credit cards for us. Doh...how many cards do I need? I would rather shop around for good offers than take it from my bank. For example, this site authorize.net may be able to help.

Looking for pad thai recipe

I was doing some spring cleaning recently and have such a hard time giving away some of my babies stuffs. I am not likely to give birth to more babies and therefore, it is no longer needed.

However, looking at all those stuffs like their first blankets, the tiny mittens and booties and crib bedding, I have so much nostalgia of them being small.

The beautiful crib bedding was a gift and I cannot part with it. Yet, it is taking up too much space in my tiny wardrobe. Maybe I must learn to give them away. Still, I am sure many parents will face this hard decision because each have its treasured memories, right?

bird's nest

My hubby insisted that I take a bottle of bird's nest each day so that I can get rid of my cough. Of course, if you are allergic to eggs or any kind of proteins, then, bird's nest is not for you because it can cause allergies.

But I do not have any known allergies and had been slurping this sweet dessert because it tastes good. Too bad that it is so costly or else I will take it every day instead of days when I am sick.

Ham and pineapple

Ahh...I missed unhealthy but tasty food like this ham and pineapple. I sometimes ask the butcher at the deli to slice the ham into thick slices so that there is more bite to it. Then, I pan fry the ham, add in the canned pineapple and flavour with some seasonings.

It is not the most healthy food, what with all the preservatives and sugar from the canned pineapple. But it is certainly wicked to prepare them once in a while...

I am so relieved that lately, I am earning more income eventhough there is less work to do. I guess my strategy of spreading out the various sources of income has finally bear fruit. Initially, in the first few months, some of the packages do not work that well. But now, after more than three months, advertisers are buying up the links and spaces.

So, once again, I must thank my lucky stars and thank God that income has been steady so far. Looking at the bright prospect, it is once again, time for opening extra FDs. And I don't think I need to find out what is balance transfers because all my accounts are looking pretty now.

Gonna finish my work tonight

I think I am going to clear all my works by tonight so that the whole of next week, I can focus on my application. There isn't much to do and I am already half way there. Once I have done all these, I need to prepare some name lists and then, I can start to download all the forms that I need to fill in.

I also need to find three referees as part of the requirement is to find three reliable persons to certify that I am fit to sit for the course. I know whom I am going to approach. Two of them are my good friends but I have decided on the third person.

I hope with all these rushing around, I won't end up with a face full of zits. Who has time for acne treatment when I have only one month to do so many things?
